A Big list of Adventure Ideas - Heroes'/Antagonist's Goals, High Concept Premises, and a list of ways to generate dozens of unique adventure ideas based on the same goal.

Hi! I have compiled a list of ideas you can use to brainstorm your adventures.

Heroes'/Antagonist's Goals

Stories are fundamentally about problem solving. The problems usually come from the mix of two sources:
  1. The Heroes strive to achieve a goal, and struggle to overcome challenges and obstacles on their path (often created by the Villain).
  2. Villain wants something, and players are trying to disrupt their evil plan.
Whatever goal the Heroes have - the Villain will have the opposite one (and vice versa). You can start from the either side. Give the goal to the Players ("Obtain a valuable item"), and the Villain will want the opposite ("Obtain the item first"). Give the goal to the Villain ("Perform an Evil Ritual") and the players will want the opposite ("Stop the Evil Ritual"). The only difference is the motivation, Heroes want things for noble reasons, Villains want them for evil ones. If you'll be using the goal for the villain - just put an evil spin on it.
List of goals you can use for either Heroes or Villains:
Players and antagonist compete for the same item (be the first to the pirate treasure.) Players are trying to prevent antagonist from getting an item (Prevent a villain from getting a powerful dark artifact.) Get the pirate treasure, the lost crystal of Atlantis, your stolen belongings. Obtain a treasure map, secret codes, powerful spell, find Villain's only weakness.
Win the race around the world. Win a mock-war between adventuring parties. Win a Quidditch game.
Evil Vizier wants to replace the king and players need to prevent that. Evil King is in charge and players need to overthrow him. The King has died and both sides want to be the next King.
Heroes: Kill the villain, a vampire/werewolf/basilisk, all the baddies in the area. Stop a serial killer. Villain: Kill the heroes, kill people to drink their blood or to satisfy violent urges.
Heroes: Kill a monster. Villain: Kill an innocent creature.
Destroy a doomsday device, the ring of power, a piece of blackmail.
An enemy base, a castle, a ship, close a portal.
Save the person being targeted for an assassination. Save the family being harassed by criminals.
Save the endangered creature from the hunter.
Someone is planning to steal the priceless diamonds during the party, stop them.
Heroes: Capture an enemy general to gain strategic information. Antagonist: Abduct a person for ransom or sacrificial ritual.
Heroes: Rescue hostages, save the kidnapped princess. Recover a soldier behind enemy lines during a war. Break someone out of jail, or liberate a prisoner en route to prison.
Rob a train/zeppelin/caravan with the treasure. Intercept a valuable message passed to the enemy.
Overtake a city, a castle, ship. Plan for an attack on the evil citadel. Compete for control of the territory. You have conquered a kingdom, defeat the remaining groups running guerrilla warfare against you.
Prepare the city to repel the enemies/monsters. Your town/building/ship has been captured and overtaken by enemies, survive under siege, and liberate it.
Deliver a prisoner to jail. Escort a bratty princess to the boarding school. Escort a caravan with the treasure.
Transport valuable treasure. Deliver a valuable intel to the central command before the enemy strikes. Deliver the ring of power to Mount Doom.
Capture the criminal/runaway. Bounty-hunters. Find a missing person. Find out what happened to the lost expedition. Find the only wizard who knows how to lift a curse.
Capture a zombie to prove they exist. Capture a unique creature for research.
Escape the pursuit of the law. Help a wrongly convicted to escape. Escape an ambush. Hide a person from danger. A massive assassins guild is trying to kill you, stay alive until dawn. Break out of prison.
Broker peace between warring nations, families, factions of nobles, King and Queen, fighting giants.
Start a war, pit people/factions against each other.
Solve a murder or a theft. Uncover a mysterious plot and understand who is behind it. Supernatural mystery. Understand what is causing the strange/weird events. Understand what happened in the abandoned/deserted city. Find out someone's dark secret, expose a corrupt official, find evidence to convict someone.
Find a spy/mole, prevent a convert mission from taking place.
A covert crime, a ninja mission, a terrorist act. Enter and leave a heavily-guarded building without getting noticed.
A business competitor, a nation.
Go undercover in the criminal gang. Blend in with the nobles to poison the King.
Enforce the law, collect debts, force a person to do something they don't want.
Prove your or someone else's innocence. Convince the angry mob that the woman they're planning to execute is not a witch.
Complete a ritual/experiment, build a weapon, open portal, resurrect/summon/awaken something.
Prevent a ritual from taking place, prevent weapon from being built, prevent a terrorist act.
Compete for the lady's heart, compete to convince the King to take a different course of action. Bribe/manipulate/intimidate a corrupt official into doing what you want. Try to close a business deal or prevent it from being closed. Play cupid. Make two quarreling people fall in love with each other. Find a lonely person/creature a girlfriend.
Brainwash and manipulate groups of people into doing your bidding, liberate brainwashed people. Free the town from the mind control spell. Convince enemy soldiers to defect to your side. Free a person from the influence of a sinister cult.
Run a kingdom, village, sports team, team of agents, organization, business. Raise morale, lower the crime, stop witch hunts, deal with corruption.
Think of the place itself as the “villain”, it is a monster without HP that "wants" to hurt players or drain their resources, and has certain powers to accomplish that. Traps, cave-ins, lava eruptions, rock-slides, avalanche, collapsing buildings, impenetrable mist, wild animals, dangerous/poisonous flora, falling into a pit, getting lost, etc. Climb a mountain, get through a swamp, quick sand, thin ice, wild magic area. Open an ancient gate. Retrieve an item from the bottom of the lake.
Get stranded in the desert, an island, an alien land, becalmed or in a storm. Help other people survive a natural disaster (storm, earthquake, flood, meteor), a war zone.
Potion ingredients for a witch, parts of an engine that were scattered during crash landing.
Lead an army against enemy general, against rival mob boss or a cowboy gang.
Rats in the basement, wolves in the forest, Zombies, Aliens. Could be impossible to kill them one by one, and must be done with a ritual, destroying the mothership, smashing the necromancer's amulet, lifting an ancient curse, placating the restless spirits, activating the ancient defense mechanisms.

Creating multiple unique adventures from the same goal

Here's the list of ways to create dozens of unique adventure ideas based on the same goal:
Players try to get away with a crime instead of investigating it.
Smuggle/Plant an item instead of stealing it. Close the portal instead of opening it. Banish the creature instead of summoning it.
Destroy an item instead of killing a person. Abduct a person instead of stealing the treasure. Protect a secret instead of the location. Chase a lost pet instead of the criminal.
Don't get murdered - prevent a murder. Steal an item - create a distraction while someone else steals it. Get away with the crime - help someone else to get away with the crime.
Make it stealthy (commit a heist instead of robbery). Avoid violence (capture a person alive instead of killing them). Achieve the goal by social means (ruin the person's reputation instead of killing them). Do it before the rivals do it first. See the list of complications for more ideas.
Deliver an item while on the run from the law. Sabotage a ritual to rescue a person. Infiltrate a group to steal an item. Solve a mystery to be able to find a lost person.
Get through the dangerous location instead of an elaborate security system. Obtain information about the villain's weakness instead of the only weapon that can kill them. Convince a witness to talk instead of following the trail of footsteps. The object is difficult to deliver because it's being hunted by bandits, or because the terrain is dangerous and inhospitable, or because it's large and fragile, or because it's a criminal trying to escape, or because it's cattle you need to keep alive, or because it's a bratty princess who doesn't want to go to school. See the List of Challenges and List of Villain's Moves for more ideas.
Steal the Elixir of Youth from the unicorn instead of stealing the Aztec gold from the Spanish Galleon. Steal an item from a dream instead of casino. Escort a dragon instead of a prisoner. Escape from Jurassic Park instead of the prison. Fight a self righteous paladin instead of the bandit gang leader.
Kill a person out of revenge instead of for money. Resurrect your loved one instead of summoning a demon. Compete for the heart of the lady instead of the treasure.

High Concept Premises

"High Concept" ideas are creative premises, interesting "What if?" scenarios. They will put your players into fantastical and unusual situations. You can use them as a starting point for your adventure - pick a High Concept idea, and see which interesting problems/goals it can generate, or just combine it with one of the goals from the list above.
  • Being shrunk to a tiny size, maybe put into a person's/creature's body. (Honey I shrunk the Kids, Ant Man, Anatomy Park).
  • Switching bodies (Freaky Friday).
  • Time Travel. Time loop (Groundhog Day).

  • Open portal to another world, a parallel dimension, an alternate timeline (Mist, Stargate, Another Earth).
  • A baby monster. An alien/dragon egg. A boy and his robot.
  • Body Snatchers, Brain Slugs - parasites that control your mind.
  • Shapeshifter - person/monster that can assume any form.
  • Evil Twins of the Heroes.
  • Hive mind. Creatures telepathically united into one consciousness. Assimilating other creatures.
  • Traditionally evil guys are good and vice versa (Shrek, Descendants, Megamind, Suicide Squad).
  • Memory wiping, altering, transplanting (Morty's Mind-Blowers, Memento.)
  • Possession / Mind Control (RoboCop, Captain America: Civil War.)
  • A mysterious magic force has created a zone where the laws of physics and magic have been warped (Annihilation, Stalker)
  • Befriend a creature (ET, How to Train your Dragon, Ratatouille, Astro Kid, Pokemon).
  • Post-apocalypse, aftermath of a disaster (Fallout, The Day After Tomorrow, Resident Evil).

  • An accident causes captive dinosaurs/monsters/demons/zombies escape (Jurassic Park).
  • Love Potion. Succubus.
  • Don't go below the speed limit - if you stop moving a person dies or a bomb explodes (Speed, Crank, The X-Files "Drive" episode).
  • A plague/disease/epidemic with unusual effects (fear of open spaces, rage, horniness, loss of one of the senses, wild magic / people to lose magic). It can be transmitted by magic, when infected casters target other casters with a spell.
  • Dangerous/violent plants.
  • An inanimate object comes to life.
  • Raising undead to return a loved one back to life.
  • You become God to race of tiny creatures.
  • Change age - turn into kids or old people.
  • Covert stealthy alien invasion.
  • A person turned into an animal.
  • A threat you forget about once you stop looking at it.
  • Infohazards.
  • Common animals are being turned savage (and giant) by a rogue magical effect (maybe an evil druid), and the party has to contain the destruction that they cause while trying to find a solution.
  • Magic is fading / going wild and unpredictable.
  • Superman goes genocidal. Defeat a being of incredible power, without it finding out that you're after it.
  • An ancient civilization is long gone, only a single robot/golem/computeweapon is still functioning.
  • Heroes are isolated in a confined environment with a monster.(Alien)
  • A location is occupied by enemies/monsters/terrorists, heroes are the only ones who escaped from being taken hostage. (Die Hard in a village, on a ship, on a zeppelin, on a train, in a magic school, in a King's castle).
  • A powerful monster begins killing people in the area (Tremors: Jaws in a desert).
  • Set in a world where the evil overlord has won.
  • The evil adventuring party.
  • Deadly game show / competition.
  • A location (small town, building, ship) is suddenly trapped underneath an impenetrable dome.
  • Someone from our world is stuck in fantasy.
  • A dangerous child (has faulty psychic powers, prophesied to be a devil, youngling of a dangerous monster)
  • Two huge powers (monsters, giants, powerful mages, armies) fight each other, causing a lot of collateral damage.
  • A large number of cursed or dangerous magical items have been sold or distributed to an unsuspecting populace (Friday the 13th series, Warehouse 13)
  • First Contact with a sentient race (Arrival, Alien Nation, Contact, District 9, Star Trek, V series)
  • Magic is fading / going wild and unpredictable.
  • Space ship crashing in middle ages.
  • Magic items (or maybe just some magic items) become secretly sentient and drive around their owners while they are asleep.
  • An ancient evil is very slowly rising out of the ground and waking up. People need to hurry to figure out how to make it go away or else assemble a team strong enough to kill it when it awakes.
  • The entire population of a town seemingly disappeared but in fact dug underground secret caves and is reverting to animal tendencies.
  • The party comes across a mysterious artifact, it melds with/into the first party member to touch it, granting them incredible powers but also changes their consciousness.
  • A long lost civilization is rising back up from the sea.
  • The local ruler may have been replaced by a doppelganger, but nobody wants to risk their neck to find out for sure.
  • Act as an experimental subject for a crazy scientist/wizard.
  • Creatures from video games, stories, paintings, come to life.
  • Spell/artifact/curse that prevents the whole town from being able to lie.
  • Space ship / UFO crashing in middle ages.
  • Duplication powers, making clones.
  • Ancient/Lost Civilization. Atlantis.
  • Gigantic Monster (Godzilla, Cloverfield, King Kong, Kaiju).
  • Superheroes/Supervillains.
  • Ghosts, haunted house/village. Restless spirits that need to be placated.
  • Zombies.
  • Vampires.
  • Ninjas.
  • Secret society/cult.
  • Underground civilization.
  • Underwater adventure. Merefolk.
  • Adventure set in a world where the forces of good won a little too well. Where the people in charge are all Lawful Good and have no tolerance for anything else. Tyranny of the traditionally good creatures like celestials, paladins, etc. The slightest misstep can cause a person to be 'disappeared'.
Use the Adventure Writing Template to help you develop these goals into a complete adventure.
See the List of Challenges, List of Complications, and List of Villain's Moves for more ideas on what challenges/obstacles the players will need to overcome on their path to the goal.
See the list of fun Fantasy Settings I have collected.
For interesting ideas for a Villain:
  • Take the personality from a TV/Movie character that you like, but make them evil. Adapt them to fantasy (Evil Steampunk Iron Man). Combine the traits from several characters (Legolas with the personality of Spider Man, John Snow with the personality of Jack Sparrow), or reverse their gender or a key personality trait (female Dr. Octavius, cheerful Batman).
  • For their appearance - find an illustration on ArtStation, Pinterest, or /ImaginaryCharacters. If the appearance is very different from the movie character you have based their personality on - even better.
I have created the "Adventure Prompts Tool" that will pick the random Goals, High Concepts, Complications, Settings, and Challenges for you.

Just my guitar hero idea here

So I had this idea for a guitar hero game (though we might not ever see one again, but a man can dream). I call it, Guitar Hero: Reawakened. The quest mode for this picks up, let us say, a year or 2 after the events of Warriors of Rock. The Demi-god witnesses terrible events as EVERY warrior (some that did not get warrior forms in WoR will receive one as well as 2 characters debuting in this game), except for 3 (Axel Steel, Johnny Napalm, and Judy Nails), are under the spell of an unknown entity (revealed to be Lou later on) The demi-god, realizing the 3 that are unaffected will not be able to handle the threat without a fourth member, seeks out Izzy Sparks (also unaffected) to recruit him and join the three in free the others from the spell and saving the world through rock and roll. Izzy's warrior form could be a humanoid tiger. Guitar battles would happen in every venue starting with the second one before the encore. The battles would have the format from guitar hero 3. The only voice acting would be the narrations from the Demi-god.
For songlists, these are songs I feel would fit in the game and are just ideas.
For the venues, the names you see from venue 2 onwards are not the characters you play, but who you will have to face in a guitar battle in that venue. The character in bracket is who would face that rocker if you do one-player mode.
Venue 1: Izzy Sparks and his transformation into a warrior (he is with his band in this before joining the other 3 main characters of this game) His basic doubles the active star power duration, while his effect+ makes it quadruple the duration. Location is Tiger Alley.
Songlist:
2: New character with warrior form of an ogre. [Johnny]
Songlist:
3: another new character (This one's warrior power can be this: basic would double the multiplier [that is without star power at all, so max multiplier would be x8 without star power without other powers combining with it] while the effect+ makes it triple the current multiplier. Warrior form is that of a humanoid polar bear) Location is Polar Dome where outside is snowing and cold. [Izzy]
Songlist:
4: Eddie Knox (His basic power in quickplay could be that a missed note reduces rock meter by half of how much it would usually go down. Warrior power would make it only a quarter of it. His warrior form is the appearance of a zombie gambler) Location would be the Knox Casino. [Johnny]
Songlist:
5: Echo Tesla (Metallic Factory) [Izzy]
Songlist:
Halfway Point: Soundgarden telephantasm experience (if they are willing to sell the license to use 5 or 6 of their songs from the telephantasm album in order to retrieve the artifact of the same name). For the story for these songs, I would imagine this being narrated by guitarist Kim A. Thayil.
Songlist (All by Soundgarden)
6: Lars Umlaut (Razorback Castle) [Axel]
7: Pandora (Roman Colosseum) [Judy]
Songlist:
8: Austin Tejas (Paramourn Theater) [Axel]
Songlist:
9: Casey Lynch (Las Vegas: Allegiant Stadium) [Judy]
Songlist:
10: Lou at the Rock Underworld (this would be a full battle of the bands instead of a regular guitar battle, but normal guitar battle rules still apply). Lou's band consists of himself on guitar, the grim reaper on vocals, the minotaur on drums, and an unknown fourth member on bass.
Songlist:
Final Boss battle with ALL 12 rockers freed (will split into three groups of 4, can be arranged for which group, but the final group is locked with Axel, Izzy, Johnny, and Judy, though you will have ALL 12 warrior powers for the final song (I feel 7empest by Tool would fit well).
Songlist:
For this, when it is a guitar battle, encore, the telephantasm experience, or the FINAL boss, they will be in warrior forms. Otherwise, in regular songs (except for venue 10), they will be in human form.
Bonus: God of Rock. (The Demi God has his own band as he heads for his homeland (Mt. Rocklympus) for a rock concert. After ALL songs in the quest mode have reached max stars, the god of rock [demi's father] appears and says he enjoyed the concert and challenges the demi-god to a guitar battle, the latter immediately accepting. After Demi-god defeats his father, the latter joins him in his band for the final encore of the game.)
Songlist:
For some post-launch DLC, I would definitely have both parts of Dream Theater's Metropolis, both part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper the song and part 2: Scenes from a Memory the album. There would be a dream-like venue for this one. The characters playing this will likely be the four main characters from quest mode in warrior or even spirit form.
Due to Axel, Johnny, and Judy not having their own venues in quest mode, Stage of Kings, CBGB, and Infernal Hall, their respective venues from WoR, will return as Quickplay+ venues.
My band lineup in this one would be Johnny Napalm on vocals, Axel Steel on drums, Judy Nails on guitar, and Izzy Sparks on bass. I feel arranging the lineup at will should be an option as well.
Also every other guitar hero fictional character that has appeared in any of the guitar hero games will be in this, including those that did not appear in quest mode in this game. However, they will be unlockable through quickplay+. That includes Clive Winston, Xavier Stone, Midori, the four that debuted in world tour, etc. Also including some guest characters like Illidan Stormrage from Warcraft [includes his venue either The Dark Portal on the Outland side or Black Temple or Argus and maybe Reinhardt from Overwatch. Character designs will be based off the designs from Warriors of Rock.
For the visual effects for when star power is active, I have Axel's instrument surrounded by a mini-sandstorm or earth shaking around him (I don't know), Johnny's emitting green smoke (like when he transformed into a warrior in WoR), Izzy's emits sparks of electricity, and (my personal favorite visual effect) Judy's lights up on fire.
To compensate for the lack of punk rock on here, I have the idea for a punk rock pack as dlc which includes, but not limited to: Ten in 2010 by Bad Religion, Come out and Play by The Offspring, Dave's Possessed Hair Medley by Sum 41, etc.

If you want to see more of this fanfic or have any comments/criticisms please let me know; My dream job is game writing so every bit of feedback helps me improve!
Fanfiction.net mirror

Graf Zeppelin was many things, but a fool was not one of them. She had fought gods, challenged the authority of her creators, and on more than one occasion had looked death in the eye; to take her lightly was akin to setting oneself on fire.
So by the time an unauthorized U-boat came within 500 meters of Zeppy, Graf was well aware.
U-3003 tilted her head, her expression filled with insanity and hatred as she lifted an arm towards the happy mother and daughter.
“Vultures.”
Three things happened in quick progression of one another: First, U-3003 launched a full barrage of six G7es Zaunkönig II, some of Ironblood’s best acoustic torpedoes. Second, and barely half a second after U-3003’s initial barrage launched, a previously camouflaged Roon materialized behind U-3003 and slammed her leg into the back of U-3003’s head. Finally—and at the same time as Roon—Graf Zeppelin snapped her fingers, and a single Me 155 swept down toward the scene before dropping a depth charge. The battle was over before it had even begun: U-3003 was immediately rendered unconscious, and her entire barrage was neutralized by the depth charge without so much as a scratch on Graf Zeppelin or the surprised, but greatly entertained Zeppy.
Of course, Graf was far less amused.

U-3003 came to with a groan, her head spinning as she tried to make sense of what had happened. Immediately she could tell that something was wrong, but it was only when she tried to move that she realized the gravity of her situation: She was shackled to a chair, and a far too eager-looking woman with murderous brown eyes was holding a large hand saw over her shoulder.
“Oh my, you’re awake!” The woman said, feigning surprise. “That’s good, I was hoping I’d be able to dismember you soon!
”The words made U-3003’s blood go cold, and her memories came back to her in a flash. She narrowed her eyes at the blonde in front of her.
“Let me go.” U-3003 growled. “I have no time for the insane.”
“Insane?” Roon repeated, her expression shifting to despair. “How rude, and I offered to start with dismemberment too…” she stepped forward, a maniacal grin spreading across her face as she brought her face within centimeters of U-3003’s. “I’ll just have to start with gouging out your eyes, then.”
U-3003’s nostrils flared. “Try it.”
Someone cleared their throat across the room, and both U-3003 and Roon shifted their gaze to the third occupant of the chamber quietly smoking a cigarette.
“That’s enough, Roon.” Graf Zeppelin said, waving her off. “Let me handle her.”
At first, U-3003 thought Roon wouldn’t listen. Then, Roon obliged, her expression rapidly shifting gears from crazed to happy.
“If that’s what you want, Graf.” Roon replied, but even as she backed up she and U-3003 continued to stare at one another.
If Graf picked up on the extreme tension between the two, she didn’t act on it. “Eyes on me, XXI. What’s your designation?”
U-3003 didn’t budge, not that she needed to - she had recognized the woman’s outline out of the corner of her eye. “I have nothing to say to you.”
Graf raised an eyebrow. “Nothing, huh? Are you really okay, lying to yourself like that?”
U-3003 worked her jaw for a second, her eyes finally shifting off Roon. Then, she spoke. “Are you enjoying this situation, vulture?”
"That depends.” Graf stood up, tossing away her cigarette. “How much are you willing to talk?” U-3003 glared at her, and Graf smirked. “Ah, I see; then I’ll enjoy this quite a bit. Let’s start from the beginning: What is your designation?”
“U-3003.”
Graf looked at Roon, who nodded. “Good.” Graf said, turning back to U-3003. “Are you affiliated with the Sirens?”
“No.”
“Are you an assassin for the Royal Navy?”
U-3003 chuckled, her eyes filled with disgust. “I would rather die a thousand times than work with the likes of them.”
Graf frowned. “Then what was the purpose of your assault on my daughter and I?”
“Revenge.”
Roon’s smile wavered, but Graf didn’t notice. “Revenge over what, exactly? If my information is correct then you were commissioned yesterday, and this was the first time we’ve met. In that span of time, what could my daughter or I have possibly done to upset you?”
U-3003 didn’t respond, and Graf sighed. “Listen to me very carefully. We already know you’re not working for anyone, and I’m willing to let this go as if nothing happened. The only individuals that know this incident even happened are myself, my accomplice-” she gestured to Roon, ”-and my daughter. If you explain yourself, you can leave. However, if you don’t...well, you already know.”U-3003 looked at her restraints, then to Roon, and finally to Graf. She could already taste the blood in her mouth, and it was not pleasant.
“You are really going to make me say it?” U-3003 clenched her fists, the tight metal cuffs cutting into her skin. “No, do not answer that; of course you are. This is natural for you, is it not? To toy with your prey, to have them beg you for mercy.” She straightened up, and relaxed. “Fine. Have it your way.”U-3003 took a deep breath, and shouted at the top of her lungs:
“YOU KILLED MY FAMILY, YOU HEARTLESS BITCH! YOU FILLED THE SKIES BLARING THAT INCESSANT DRONE AND YOU BOMBED, AND YOU BOMBED, AND YOU BOMBED UNTIL NOTHING WAS LEFT! Do you know what it is like, experiencing that from the ground? First the buzzing, then the whizzing, then ABSOLUTE HELL. All I could do was sit there was watch, watch as you took everything from me bit by bit until it was my turn to die AS IF I HAD NOT ALREADY. And you know what? I remember it. I REMEMBER EVERY. VIVID. PART OF IT. EVERY. SINGLE. SECOND. SO YOU ASK ME, YOU DARE ASK ME WHAT MAKES ME WANT REVENGE? That’s what, and I’ll make sure you never forget it.”
For what felt like hours, the room was silent save for U-3003’s laboured breathing. Then, Graf raised her hand, and the outline of a Ju 87 appeared in between her fingers.
“You seem to be mistaken.” Graf said, flinging the shadow-like Ju 87 into the air. “I did not kill you, nor did I kill your family. Tell me, is this the sound of a vulture?”
The shadowy plane began to fly towards the ceiling, and upon reaching it entered into a screeching nosedive that echoed throughout the room. Just before it crashed into U-3003 it angled up, and pulled clear into the air only to repeat the process once more. To anyone listening they would hear the deafening cry of a Jericho trumpet as the plane dove, and for most the sound brought nothing but anxiety and fear. For U-3003 though, it only brought confusion. She listened carefully as the plane performed its pattern several times, screaming into her ears before swooping overhead. Certainly, the sound was terrifying...but it was not their sound. This was not the sound she remembered.
The plane disappeared, and U-3003 glanced down in surprise as Graf loosened the restraints. Before she could say anything Graf stared at her, and immediately U-3003 understood the message. This is not them. I made a mistake.
U-3003 felt her adrenaline leave her like a deflated balloon, and in its place a wave of nausea overtook her as she began to see things clearly: The interior of the room, the eyes of the demon she had crossed paths with, and the realization of her actions.
“You’re free to go.” Graf said, crossing her arms. “Get out, and don’t even think about attacking my daughter again.”U-3003 wanted to ask Graf something. In fact, she wanted to ask her everything...but not now. She had made an error, and she needed to accept it.
“...Thank you.” U-3003 said, staggering to her feet and walking to the door as Roon opened it for her. In the entrance, she hesitated and looked back. “I…”
“Your answers aren’t with me.” Graf said. She pointed to Roon, who was still smiling. “They’re with her. Now both of you get out before I turn you into paste.”
Roon smiled, and she pushed U-3003 out of the doorway before closing the door behind them.
“Well...” Roon mused, turning to U-3003 with a twirl. “that was...enlightening.”

U-3003 and Roon walked through the facility in silence, the corridors fading into a blur as U-3003 thought over the day’s events. Initially she had been confused, but speaking to Z23 & U-2501 had been helpful up until she had gotten...sidetracked. Now she was confused again, but strangely enough the girl walking alongside her felt like the least of her worries.
She could easily kill me right now. U-3003 thought. Everything I said back there was a bluff. So why do I feel so...calm around her?
U-3003 tried to determine what she should do, but in that instant Roon held out her arm, and as U-3003 bumped into it she realized they had entered an elevator.
“You’re a Type XXI U-boat, right?” Roon asked, pushing a button. “U-boats have their own section of the facility, but normally they’re all in the same place. We should be there soon.”
U-3003 stayed quiet. She still wasn’t sure what to think of Roon, and she knew that one wrong word could easily lead to a long, painful death.
The elevator whizzed down for a moment before it came to a halt, and after a few more minutes of walking U-3003 found herself in front of what appeared to be a saloon, only instead of a bar the interior looked like a miniature casino.
“Your friends should be somewhere inside.” Roon explained. “You were unconscious for a few hours, so they probably gave up on finding you and are hoping someone brings you here instead.”
U-3003 grimaced. She remembered being embarrassed in front of U-2501 now and leaving without warning. She’d have to make it up to her.
Wait, how did she know I was with-
“Alright,” Roon said, gazing innocently at U-3003. “I should get going. But...”
U-3003 frowned. “But?”
Roon giggled. “Oh, nothing.” She leaned forward and whispered into U-3003’s ear before stepping back, humming cheerfully as she skipped off.
U-3003 watched her go. She shook her head and entered the saloon, but as the doors shut behind her Roon’s words lingered in the back of her mind.
‘We’ll be in touch.’

The game room was a wide, colorful area packed with slot machines, arcade games, and booths as far as the eye could see. Just like Roon had said the place was filled to the brim with U-boats, and it was only after she got directions that she knew where to go.
U-556 and U-557 were playing Go Fish when the former noticed U-3003 meandering through the tabletop area and called to her. “Hey, 3003! Over here!” U-556 waved, and U-3003 returned the gesture halfheartedly.
“Where did you go?” U-556 asked as U-3003 pulled up a chair. “U-2501 was super worried about you!”
“I got...distracted by the sights.” U-3003 replied. A half lie is better than a total lie. “Speaking of which, where is U-2501?
”U-557 motioned downward, and U-3003’s eyes widened as she saw U-2501 curled up in the fetal position beneath the table, slowly rocking back and forth.
“I’m a bad sister,” U-2501 muttered, “I’m a bad sister…”
U-3003 pinched herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming, and looked back at U-557. “How long has she been like this?!?”
U-557 shrugged. “We found her sometime after you left. 556 persuaded her to come to the Gamehouse with us, but once we sat down she went under there and hasn’t come out since.” U-557 took a sip of her coffee, shivering from the taste. “Whatever happened sure did a number on her.”
U-3003 leaned back, lowering her head. This was her fault, and she needed to make up for it.
“2501,” U-3003 got out of her chair and gently tapped U-2501 on her shoulder, causing U-2501 to flinch. “Are you okay?”
U-2501 shook her head, and U-3003 crouched down in front of her. “Do you want to talk about it?”
U-2501 didn’t respond.
“2501, I am not ma-”
“Leave me alone, 3003. I’m a horrible sister, it’s okay if you hate me.”
Something inside U-3003 snapped. Fine, she thought. Have it your way.
For a moment U-3003 backed off, getting out from under the table. Then, she dragged her chair out of the way before launching herself at U-2501, wrapping her arms around her as U-2501 reeled in shock.
“3003-!”
“Shh.” U-3003 said, hugging her tighter. “Just accept the hug.”
U-2501 hesitated at first, but soon enough she gave in, and U-3003 could hear her sister sobbing lightly as they embraced. “Hey, it will be okay.” U-3003 whispered. “It will be okay.”
“No it won’t.” U-2501 said, sniffling. “I tried to make you feel better, but all I did was act like a psychopath and make you want to run away. It’s my fault.”
“It is not your fault.” U-3003 released U-2501 and looked straight into her eyes. “Yes, I was feeling embarrassed over the other night, but that was on me. I knew you were trying to cheer me up, and I appreciate you for that. It makes me happy to have you as my sister.”
“Even if I was being a complete idiot?” U-2501 asked, “Because by all means-”
“You are fine.” U-3003 assured her. “Trust me.” Besides, I was too flustered to notice… “Now, do you want to get out of here? It seems cramped.”
U-2501 nodded, and she climbed out from underneath the table as U-3003 helped her to her feet. They smiled at each other for a moment until U-556 jumped out of her chair and hugged U-2501 from behind, causing her to blush.
“556, don’t be so sudden-”“This is an ambush, no mercy allowed!”
“Ah, not there! You know I’m ticklish!”
U-3003 watched in amusement as U-556 dismantled U-2501 entirely, sending her into a huge fit of laughter. She smirked, and it was mirrored by U-557 as U-3003 joined U-556 and began tickling U-2501, much to her distress.
Don’t worry, 556. U-557 thought, watching the carnage. They’ll be just fine.

“This should be it.” U-2501 said, standing with U-3003 outside her room. “Again, I’m sorry that things aren’t labelled well down here; you can always customize your door if you’d like.”
“I can think about it.” U-3003 agreed, opening her door. “If I have any ideas, would you mind helping me out?”
U-2501 blushed. “Me? I’d love to, but I’m not very good at painting…”
“Relax.” U-3003 said, smiling. “Just think about it.”
U-2501 nodded and smiled back. “Alright. Good night, U-3003.”
“Good night.”
U-3003 closed the door, and listened quietly as U-2501’s footsteps faded into the distance. When she was positive U-2501 was gone she spun toward her room, frantically searching for a door.
Bathroom, bathroom…
U-3003 noticed a door to her right and flung it open, revealing a small utility closet with a bucket. This will have to do.
U-3003 picked up the bucket and immediately felt her stomach heave before she threw up, leaning into the bucket as she retched for a solid minute. When she was done, she wiped her mouth and placed a hand against her chest, struggling for breath.
Shit...
Truth be told, U-3003 hadn’t gotten over her earlier interrogation by Graf. In fact, the conversation had been making her feel sick ever since, and it had worsened shortly after she had reconciled with U-2501.
Shit, shit, shit.
U-3003 crumpled to the floor, staring at it absentmindedly. She was still trying to process what had happened, but one thing was clear.
I screwed up...I screwed up, and I almost killed someone because of it. God, what am I doing?
She slammed her fist on the floor, tears pooling in her eyes. Damn it...she even had a daughter, yet I was perfectly fine with killing them both…
They are vultures.
No, they’re not.
Yes, they are. You heard the buzzing.
“It’s not the same noise!” U-3003 shouted, slamming her fist against the floor again. “It’s not! I know what I heard, and it wasn’t the same sound. I’m sure of it…”
Are you, or were you afraid that they would kill you, and you lied to escape?
I was not afraid.
You were very afraid.
And what if I was? You think I can just lie to myself about what I hear?
Yes, but it does not matter anymore. We know what they look like-
No.
-we know where they are-
Stop.
-so when we get the chance-
STOP.
-we WILL kill them.
“SHUT UP!” U-3003 yelled, clutching her head. “Shut up…”
U-3003 laid there for a long time, the room quiet save for her breathing. When she stood up, she could only sulk to her bed and collapse in it.
What am I doing...is this what it means, to be human?
She closed her eyes wanting to think things over, but a loud rumbling made her groan.
Right, I hardly ate anything today...in fact, have I eaten anything at all?
She leaned up in bed and rubbed her eyes, idly scanning the room before her eyes landed on the tray Z23 had brought her right after she had woken up that morning. That answers that.
U-3003 spent the next half hour forcing herself to eat, pushing down her guilt whenever it rose up and gripping her sheets in frustration at the nausea and the voice in her head that came with it. She still wasn’t happy and her body felt like a mess, but this was a mess she had made, and she would push through it. Finally she finished eating, and she rested back into her bed.
I have to figure this out. She thought. I refuse to hurt the innocent. I refuse to be like them.
U-3003 laid still in bed until she finally dozed off, and the same dream came to her once more…

I always have the same dream.
I am walking along an old bridge, cloaked in mist. I cannot turn around, I cannot look up, and I cannot see anything but the cobblestones at my feet. Yet with every step I take I know that they are coming, and the sheer thought of their presence above terrifies me to no end.
Vultures.
The buzzing of their hearts, the shrieking of the land, and the sudden explosions that light the mist aflame...I remember these so well, but I do not know why. I am not of land, so why should I be afraid of what haunts the skies? Only when I reach the end of the bridge do I remember the truth, and it is not the truth I want to hear.
For my life was ended by the vultures of the night.
...
Chapter Two is done. Sorry if anyone saw the formatting errors, copy/pasting from Google Docs causes a load of issues. I really appreciate the positive feedback so far, and I'll try to post a new chapter biweekly if possible.

  • Set in a world where the evil overlord has won.
  • The evil adventuring party.
  • Deadly game show / competition.

If you want updates on my future posts - follow me here.
Please contribute to this project!

Ethereum's future is bright, the DApps are coming!

The DApps are coming, the DApps are coming!

Chin up boys and girls – the DApps (Decentralized Apps) are finally coming. Utility, not speculation/manipulation/shilling etc., is what, in the end, will give/justify the value of blockchains.

Of the top 100 tokens, 91 of them are on the Ethereum blockchain (ERC-20). The most valuable non-Ethereum tokens by market cap are USDT (4) and GAS (25). Eventually, ICX (6), VeChain (3) and EOS (1) and several others will be migrating to their own blockchains. Still, this leaves Ethereum with an overwhelming market dominance for tokens (aka DApps) and Ethereum has been clearly recognized as the blockchain to launch ICOs/DApps.

We have already seen several DApps successfully launch on mainnet including CrytptoKitties, Crypto Sportz, Edgeless, Etherbots, Ethercraft, Etheremon, Etheroll, ETHLend, Forkdelta (RIP Etherdelta), 0xBitcoin and Ethlance among others. Check out a whole list on DappRadar and track the progress of some lesser known, smaller projects on StateoftheDApps (Note: I cannot vouch for all of these DApps. There have been and always will be scammers in the crypto space. Please, always do your own research!)

For the rest of March + Q2 (April - June) we are going see the biggest implementation of DApps on the Ethereum mainnet to date. Below I’ve laid out, in alphabetical order and in varying detail, what’s happening between now and the end of Q2 of this year. (I’ve also added some info, where especially relevant, of big stuff coming after Q2). I hope any biases I may have do not come through too much in the writing.

To hammer home on utility once more: One year ago today, the daily transaction count was at 57,000. Yesterday, the network confirmed over 752,000 transactions (a 13x increase) (And remember, ATH in January was 1.349 million txns!) [Source]

Some general Ethereum news to be excited about:

  • Vitalik recently hinted, in a since deleted tweet, that the sharding testnet will be coming online in the near future (I think Q2 isn’t too early a guess).
    • What is sharding? Sharding is where the entire state of the network is split into a bunch of partitions called shards that contain their own independent piece of state and transaction history. In this system, certain nodes would process transactions only for certain shards, allowing the throughput of transactions processed in total across all shards to be much higher than having a single shard do all the work as the mainchain does now. [Source]

  • Alpha Casper FFG testnet has been successfully running since Dec. 31, 2017.
    • What is Casper? Casper FFG aka Vitalik’s Casper is a hybrid POW/POS consensus mechanism. This is the version of Casper that is going to be implemented first. In a Proof of Stake system, validators stake a portion of their Ethers and start validating blocks. Meaning, when they discover a block which they think can be added to the chain, they will validate it by placing a bet on it. [Source]

(To stay up-to-date on Ethereum research development, check out Ethresear.ch)

  • The Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) is March 8-10 in Paris. Talks will focus around “scalability, anonymity, development tools, governance compliance” among other topics.
    • Speakers include representatives from the Ethereum Foundation, Ledger, Metamask, Shapeshift, Oraclize, Uport, Web3Foundation, Melonport, ConsenSys, JP Morgan, Coinbase – Toshi, Parity, SpankChain, FunFair, Aragon, AirSwap, EEA, IExec, Cosmos, OmiseGO, Circle, Gnosis, among others.
    • UPDATE: EthCC was a resounding success! If you missed it or want to re-watch any of the talks, check out this handy thread of videos, painstakingly culled and timestamped by u/alsomahler.
  • The Ethereum Developer Conference (EDCON) is May 3-5 in Toronto. This will be the biggest ETH dev conference since DEVCON 3 last November. The agenda is still being worked out, but speakers include representatives from the Ethereum Foundation, Polkadot, Parity, Plasma, OmiseGO, Cosmos, Tendermint, Giveth, Maker, Gnosis, and many others.
  • The Enterprise Ethereum Foundation (EEF) just keeps growing and growing and growing.

More, because I just can’t stop:

  • MetaMask recently passed 1 million installs!
  • 5.6 billion requests per day for Infura.io (Decentralized web3 infrastructure)
  • 280,000 downloads of TruffleSuit (ETH development framework)
    [Source]

A post mortem of Britney Jean, 5 years later

https://preview.redd.it/z45fsq17ce221.jpg?width=953&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49131fb1d1aeb49fee7c8b1a781c106b0172d877

“I can't believe this is my eighth studio album and I know I keep telling you that it is my most personal record yet, but its true and I'm really proud of that”
This quote from The Legendary Miss Britney Spears would most likely haunt her for the rest of the career, especially because it came in the eve of the release of her infamous 2013 album Britney Jean, whose title anticipated a rare introspective look into a star with over a decade on the spotlight (most of the times for the wrong reasons)… also, it came right after her previous album, 2011’s Femme Fatale, became her first full-length effort without any songwriting input from the Princess of Pop, although a Japanese bonus track features a co-writing credit from her.
Of course Britney Jean deserves most of the criticism it receives and yet, it also deserves way more than just being outright ignored even by most of Britney’s diehard fans: Britney Jean is more than just Work Bitch and 13 b-sides, is more than Brit’s most dated-on-arrival release… Britney Jean is a case study of what was pop in its time, what changed and why it stopped being as popular as it once was….

POP BEFORE BRITNEY JEAN

https://preview.redd.it/p5ecdbd9ce221.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0662fd24b364cf6cf25b1961e9d15f98d9d39b6

Early 00s pop music was being left aside by the general public during the heydays of gangsta rap, Timbaland/Pharrell-infused R&B and rock/nu-metal… at least until around the period between 2007 and 2009, the start of the Golden Era for popheads: The anthemic choruses, the prominent synths, the light and care-free nature of the lyrics, everything was there to pump you up and make you dance… however everything would change in 2013, when streaming was finally introduced to the Billboard formula. After the satirical K-pop track Gangnam Style by Psy took the world by storm, it was noticed how in the United States the song was blocked from the top spot by the inconsequential One More Night by Maroon 5, even if Style had the lead in sales for most of the 12 weeks it stayed at the Top 10 (as you might have guessed, radio had something to do with that), pushing Billboard to update their methodology and add streaming to the mix.
The first song that benefited from the change in the tracking methodology would prophetize what would come next for the charts in general: Harlem Shake, a nearly-instrumental meme song debuted at the top spot and stayed there for 6 weeks total. Another novelty song, Ylvis’ The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?) would visit the Top 10 later in the year based on virality alone.
Although rap, indie music and more traditional pop music found their way during this year, the presence of outliers like Lorde’s Royals, genre-defying tracks like Avicii’s Wake Me Up! (a country/folk tinted EDM anthem) and Florida Georgia Lane’s Cruise (considered the grandfather of the bro-country genre, made popular on pop radio thanks to a tackled-on rap feature by Nelly), and the aforementioned viral hits not only showed that general audiences were craving something new, but their success would pave the way for a big change in pop music.

BRITNEY BEFORE BRITNEY JEAN

"Sometimes you don't need to use words to go through what you need to go through, sometimes it's an emotion you need to feel when you dance, that you need to touch. And the only thing that can touch it is when you move a certain way."
Britney Spears on the For The Record documentary, one of the rare glimpses she gave us on her life before Britney Jean
Britney, of course, was partially a pioneer and a tail-rider of the maximalistic electro sound of the era, as proven by the influence and cult following of what most people consider her magnum opus, or at least her more direct and honest album, 2007’s Blackout, which is ironic considering that Britney only has two writing credits in the whole project and how even The Unstoppable Danja called it ‘impersonal’.
After Blackout, Britney would continue to ride the same sonic palette with her follow-up, 2008’s Circus and then move onto Femme Fatale, which, in spite of its “forward-thinking” nature (as described by the label-appointed producer and current persona non grata Dr. Luke) and slick production, it was heavily criticized for its anonymity and lack of input of the singer in the record, which led to Britney to defend herself stating, rightfully, that she had nothing to prove.

THE MAKING OF A PERSONAL ALBUM

https://preview.redd.it/tzfh8fqsce221.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2e7bf1a1a7f9469be632470e1d6bb53397ff2f62

The mastermind behind Britney Jean was none other than hitmaker will.i.am, whose involvement on the record came as a surprise to no one given how they have collaborated twice at that point and get along really well (you can read more about it in this post I made a couple of months ago), however, the Black Eyed Peas frontman doesn’t deserves all of the credit for the record as Britney herself decided that she would be more involved and had a pivotal role into the making of this record.
Although the early stages of the album pointed towards a more hip-hop release, will.i.am’s involvement and her chemistry with Britney put her forward into the recording and making of the album.
Realizing that she wanted a more straightforward release that wasn’t as bouncy and genre-hopping as her predecessors, Britney searched with will.i.am a series of collaborators that could help her bring her ideas to life, as she didn’t wanted to sing impersonal songs that her team just happened to receive; this, unfortunately, ruled out the involvement of the Saint Patron of pop production Max Martin, although it relegated Dr. Luke to a sole bonus track so that’s a win in my book. Britney Jean is her only release in which she’s credited as a co-writer in each track, including bonus tracks… her closest before that was In The Zone in which 9 of the 14 (including bonus) tracks sported a Britney co-write.

THE PERKS OF BEING A PERSONAL ALBUM

I have been through a lot in the past few years and it has really inspired me to dig deeper and write songs that I think everyone can relate to […] I want to show you the different sides of Britney Spears.
I am a performer.
I am a Mom.
I am funny.
I am your friend!
I am Britney Jean.
Britney Jean Spears
Britney has never been the kind of performer that would pour her soul into her lyrics, and even have occasionally distanced her private life from her lyrics (she famously rejected the Timberlake-bashing Sweet Dreams My LA Ex, later given to ex-S Club 7 member Rachel Stevens as her debut single), although in the few glimpses we have gotten from her real persona (the stunning Everytime and the dubious My Baby for example) have always leaved her fans with the idea of her getting more involved with the subject matter of the tracks… I mean, the exploration of fame in tracks like Circus and Piece of Me are great, but what about explorations of who is Britney?
Britney Jean is her first album released in her 30s, and after finally deciding to get this involved in the songwriting department 15 years into her singing career was no fluke: chalk it up to coincidence, to the fact that it was long due given her background (Britney had lived A LOT of unwanted stuff during her career, married twice, had two kids, survived the most public mental breakdown unimaginable and more while being one of the most successful female performers currently working… also, that year she had ended her engagement with her manager Jason Trawick) or to misogyny (if you wanna go there) but female singers seems to go personal and/or mature in their 30s, with some popular examples including Madonna’s Like A Prayer (described by her as being "about my mother, my father, and bonds with my family"), Mariah Carey’s post-divorce genre-bender Butterfly (if her birth year is believed to be 1969), Beyoncé’s whole post-Matthew Knowles era (4 was released three months before she turned 30), Nicki Minaj’s back-to-my-roots release The Pinkprint and Katy Perry’s purposeful woke pop release Witness (Katy, I love you but 💀) among others.
Another thing to consider is that doing “personal” songs have always being interpreted as tracks with stripped-away or piano-driven arrangement, something that Britney, who had sung about being on the club or having sex (or even both on the same track) so many times it kinda become her trademark, is not something she’s might get allowed to do, especially when the current-at-the-time pop scene and Britney’s then-current sound were a far cry from the kind of sound these “confessional” tell-all songs normally have.

#BritneyPleaseSavePopMusic

(this was a real hashtag that was worldwide trending topic on Twitter in September 2013)
With the anticipation of what a Britney-fied personal record would sound like, anticipation was in an all-time high among fans… so it was natural that her most introspective record would be anchored with an EDM song called Work Bitch. In Britney’s defense, will.i.am pointed out almost immediately how the braggadocio track didn’t represented the album but it was rather about Britney Spears herself.
Promoted with what was heavily rumored to be a 6.5-million-dollars budgeted video which was supposedly heavily sanitized from its originally sexed-up original version (more on that later), the video itself represented most of the promotion the whole album received, as the album’s second and final single (Perfume) was left to rot in negligence after the album’s release.
Outside of a couple of TV appearances (not performances, just interviews), including one to promote her then-upcoming “2-year” Las Vegas residency Britney Spears: Piece of Me, and an E! documentary about the making-of the album and said residency, no actual promotion took place for Britney Jean, which led to the inevitable.

BRITNEY UNLEASHES HER MOST “PERSONAL” ALBUM

https://i.redd.it/1no6q6iqce221.gif

Britney Jean was unleashed to the world on December 3rd of 2013, one day after the Princess’ birthday, and was a big commercial disappointment, debuting at number 4 on Billboard with sales of 107,000 copies (a little bit more than a third of the sales of Femme Fatale), even lower than those of her debut album …Baby One More Time; 3 years after its release, BJ had sold less in the United States than FF in its opening week, although it was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA… this February. Internationally, the release didn’t fare any better and debuted at record-low positions for her releases in most international markets, including missing the Top 30 in the UK.
As most of you already know, reviews we’re nasty all around, the worst of Britney’s career. Because of the somewhat mean content of some of those reviews, I would instead resume what are the biggest perks critics had with the release:

SING A SONG OF SIXPENCE, MISS BRITNEY SPEARS

After one of the songs leaked ahead of the album’s release, there were accusations that backing vocalist Myah Marie (who had appeared on Brit’s previous two albums) was the lead singer not only on said leaked track but also in a large portion of the album (this is what she sounds like), accusations that Marie herself denied as well as Britney’s reps.
Her representatives claimed that Marie wasn’t involved in neither Perfume nor Passenger, the tracks that were the source of most of the controversy, and ultimately she wasn’t credited in none of those songs, although she’s credited as a (not background) vocalist in several of the other tracks of the album (mostly the Preston-produced songs as Work Bitch, Tik Tik Boom, Til It's Gone, Chillin' With You and Now That I Found You), including Alien (in which she’s not credited), who had a vocal steam leak in 2014 which showcases how uncanny is Myah’s impression of Britney is. A credited background singer is Sia in her co-composed single Perfume, which was the source of a weird misstep when Britney was caught lip-syncing to a version of the song with Sia’s vocals forefront in the mix.
A lot has been said about how Britney’s signature singing ‘baby’ voice is not her real one, how do they compare and how much damage has done to Brit’s current vocal chops, and even though she can still sing wherever she wants to, it’s quite obvious that she’s not that comfortable with it and, as such, she prefers to enhance her voice with the use of technology and some studio trickery… also, she might have gotten used to it considering how effortless and vivid were her earlier performances… here’s I’m A Slave 4 U at the 2001 VMAs just because how iconic it is.

BRITNEY JEAN… BY BRITNEY JEAN SPEARS

"People can take everything away from you, but they can never take away your truth.
The question is: Can you handle mine?"
Britney Spears in a song that’s not from this album and not originally from her
Described by critics as “a concept album about the loneliness of pop life”, Britney Jean actually open with quite a promise with Alien, a mid-tempo, melancholic, airy, ethereal dance pop opener that works as a more teenage-sounding version of Ray of Light, which is not surprising considering the involvement of said album’s mastermind (the aforementioned William Orbit) and that sonically picks-up where FF closer Criminal left off, but lyrically is quite different, as it portrays Britney having an intimate and personal realization that she, after years of tumultuous and erratic events, has lost grip of who she was and how she felt like an extraterrestrial in her own world; however she realizes that she’s not longer alone as she looks at the glow in the stars as a light to guide her home away from her insecurities of the past, and to feel safe and finally finding comfort in her true skin, as the chorus repeats the catchphrase ‘not alone’ “until it is pitchshifted up like a departing space ship
Originally intended to include Gaga in the song (and also supposed to be released as a single, which unfortunately didn’t happened), Alien was considered the conceptual and musical highlight of the project by critics, and is easily the most personal, vulnerable and my personal highlight of the project… which made everything that came afterward a hard pill to swallow. Before that, I can’t help to mention THE GLITCH (2:14 in the song), which was apparently, as everything wrong with music of the period, will.i.am’s fault.
https://preview.redd.it/sqy5pdvjce221.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc818c3624856731e041c2380840004b0c8edea6

Work Bitch (alternatively known in censored form as Work Work, or in the explicit version as Bitch Bitch) is a hard hitting EDM smasher and heavy mood-whiplash, which was definitely not co-written by Sebastian Ingrosso, in which Britney gently asks us (over a basic club beat which grows more overloaded as the song moves forward) is we want a hot body, an European luxury car (either a Bugatti, a Maserati or a Lambo skirrt skirrt skirrt) or to sip martinis while partying in a big mansion in France, only to disappoint us by calling us bitches and telling us to better work as if we were supermodels and she was RuPaul.
WB is, if you wanna practice some mental gymnastics, more ‘personal’ than its given credit for, as Britney details how much benefits she gets from hustling all these years, and inviting us to dance with that smashing wall-of-sound-laden beat that drowns most of the track. Way more forward-thinking and exciting that everything that comes after it, WB has become somewhat of a new classic for the Princess of Pop, and is pretty much deserved of said designation.
Perfume, co-written by Sia, is another album highlight (actually Britney’s favorite from the album) and one of the finest ballads of Brit’s late-catalogue. Written about her ex-fiancé Jason Trawick, the song deals with Britney’s insecurity about a current relationship, with Britney singing with some of her strongest vocals in years about how she believes that her partner is cheating on her and how she puts on her perfume in order to mark her territory. Released with a tie-in with her perfume Fantasy, the song kinda flopped worldwide and halted all of the promotion of the album, however it still remains (alongside the rawer Dreaming Mix, included as a bonus track) as one of the most interesting songs in 2010s Britney catalogue.
The music video, directed by known troll and middling talented videomaker Joseph Khan, has an unreleased director’s cut in which the straightforward concept of a cheating partner is changed to that of Britney playing the Angelina Jolie role in a gone-wrong version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith sans the boyfriend who is also an assassin.
It Should Be Easy finds Britney’s voice drown in both the auto-tune setting used by Kanye for the Runaway coda and the vocals of guest-star will.i.am in the chorus, all while produceco-writer David Guetta rehashes Swedish House Mafia (which originally broke up the same year in which BJ was released). The song, about Britney imagining a bright-normal-future with a man who had stolen her heart, stating that love “shouldn't be complicated”. Although I like this song, and her team obviously likes it to as it commissioned remixes to be serviced to clubs, it signals when things start to go somewhat downhill.
Tik Tik Boom, the T.I.-assisted fifth track, was always dubbed as a potential third single (remixes were commissioned but nothing official ever came up), and it’s not hard to see why: as one of her rare collaborations with a rapper, the static-y, dance-floor ready production presents Britney teasing a male partner with a night of… well… tik tik boom… that means sex, doing so while serving some circa-2001 sexy vocals as T.I. raps about treating her like an animal up to the point that PETA (which hates Britney) should be called in response. It’s fast, it’s straightforward and yet, it’s kinda forgettable and also very disappointing coming from or Princess Urbanney.
Guetta comes back with Body Ache, another outdated EDM bop in which Brit (accompanied by vocoder and several dozens of vocal distortion treatments) sings about the kind of ‘I wanna dance so hard it gonna turn you on’ anthem which Miss Spears can do on her sleep, with a backtrack that sounds straight out of the EDM will.i.am was doing with the Peas during the Beginning/E.N.D. era. Also it ends in a somewhat anticlimactic way.
Personal Britney makes a return with this track that wouldn’t be too out of place in FF: The Guetta co-written Til It’s Gone, in which Brit realizes that, after losing the love of her life (Trawick), her life would never be the same, or how “you never know what you got 'til it's gone”. Coming some two years to late sonically, in terms of lyrics the track it’s another story, as some interesting imagery pops here and there and it’s nice to leave the dance floor behind, especially when talking about a woman who (at least in the previous albums) rarely shut up about them.
Katy Perry arrives on the record but not as a feature, but as a writer, in the Diplo-produced, Sia-co-written and Prism outtake Passenger, in which some interesting EDM beats moves out of the way after the opening (they come back, don’t worry) to reveal a refreshing and very welcome electropop rock song with some great Britney vocals about letting someone to guide her after she’s willing to let herself be his ‘passenger’. Great lyrics, daring production, good vocal performance… it’s not hard to see why critics loved this track so much, and it’s a shame it gets buried among so much underwhelming stuff.
https://preview.redd.it/hkdoktqmce221.jpg?width=970&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b349cd2e99a44dc732760b6f131be7dc3be1da38

Chillin’ with You, the album’s most infamous moment, finds Britney dueting with her sister, ex-Nickelodeon star and attempted country singer Zoey Meredith Brooks, about hanging out together and drinking wine (Brit likes red, Chase Matthews' ex likes white wine) while, as the southern white suburban moms they are, they feel they have nothing else to worry about. Although the lyrics are… well… cute, and the subject matter is decidedly novel by Britney’s standards, the mixture of country and EDM doesn’t mash as well as the producers might had expected… also, the fact that their vocals were so obviously recorded in different sessions (as showed by the kind of chemistry you only see in cheesy 70s movies starring John Travolta and Lily Tomlin) makes the whole ordeal so surreal.
The album closer in the standard edition is Don’t Cry, a FUCK YOU MR. TRAWICK song in which Britney reassures his man that it’s not worthy to cry as their relationship was always directed to end no matter what they do, and how she’s gonna go to not see him all tear eyed. The bouncy but subdued dubstep back track by pop goblin and producer will.i.am enhances what is arguably Britney’s best vocals in the whole album and some really nice lyrics which still doesn’t work as an album closer.
Sia comes back in the first bonus track of the deluxe edition, Brightest Morning Star, and she brings with her current pop Pariah (that would be Dr. Luke, but he’s only in this track) to the mix, on a track about God (or maybe about her kids, according to Dr. Puke), or at least one that implies to be one; in Sia’s words: ‘Britney was extremely sweet. She came in with the title ‘Brightest Morning Star’ and told me that’s how Jesus found his way. She wanted to write a kind of gospel song that wasn’t ramming it down your throat’. Despite the good intentions, BGS is no Jesus Walks and it gets short in the musical department, with a surprisingly weak instrumental which doesn’t do any good service to the song.
Britney continues her religious quest with Hold on Tight, a mid-tempo ballad that in which Miss Spears details how God comes into her dreams (or it might be an Incubus?) showing her the path to righteousness, even when the road is not as friendly with her, and… to be honest, this is my least favorite song on the album, it’s just so forgettable even if it’s quite refreshing in the context of BJ.
To end the evening, Britney continues her unintentional audition to become a gospel singer with Now That I Found You, a shameless EDM track (with early-10s euphoric drop and everything) about how incomplete she was until she found Him (to be honest, this could also be another love song, but after two bonus tracks about God it’s easy to see where she was pointing towards with the vague lyrics) and how everything is better now. Unlike the forgettable predecessors, NTIFY is fun (dated? Sure… but also fun), it’s bright, it’s colorful, it’s happy, and one of my favorite songs on the record… even if co-writer Guetta basically ripped off his own hit Without You from 3 years before.

u/radiofan15’s UNWANTED OPINION ABOUT BRITNEY JEAN

Britney Jean is not an autobiography, it’s not a tell-all gossip-venting machine, it’s a clean, overproduced product of misdirection and lack of focus… and yet it’s actually fascinating in several ways: it’s arguably the greatest resume you would find of how pop music sounded in between 2008 and 2013, it’s a great bridge between the impersonal heavily-polished Femme Fatale and the serviceable and engaging Glory, which saw Britney leading the way on how everything would sound from the start.
It’s quite ironic how the album’s naming (taking a cue from Janet Jackson’s Damita Jo, her actual middle name) plays against it, as self-titled releases (unless they are debut albums) are associated with being in control of your output or reinventions (pop examples includes Paramore as their first release as a trio, Beyoncé to fit the minimalistic sounds and Janet Jackson’s janet. to showcase independence from the Jackson family) and unless you’re Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel or Weezer, the idea of having a second eponymous release usually means that audiences should expect to experience the performer in a never-seen before way. 2001’s Britney was the album that give a meaning to the phrase “I’m not that innocent” spurred in her previous effort, with lyrics talking about womanhood and sexuality being complemented with R&B vibes and rock/hip-hop elements. Britney Jean, when compared to Femme Fatale, is way behind the difference between Britney and Oops!... I Did It Again, which in retrospective is even worse as the relative freshness and reinvention of Glory leaves the ‘openness’ and ‘variety’ of BJ in shambles.
One of the album’s biggest mistakes is in its sequencing: the first three tracks are the obvious highlights, the next three are basically DOA EDM songs, the next four are the most “adventurous” musically speaking and the bonus tracks are all about God. Taking out some of the ‘pure club’ anthems could theoretically create an album more deserving of its ‘personal’ label, going full Spinal Tap and amp up the production values to do something crazier might have given us something that was at least digestible in a single listening.
The album, as it is, is not perfect, but it’s far from the dumpster fire more people called it, including some of the most interesting Britney songwriting in years (or even her career) and some tracks that are already started to show signs of cult classic. The only positive thing most people seems to agree with is how short it is: with the alternative mix of Perfume included, BJ is ‘only’ 50 minutes long (the standard edition is just 36 minutes long), which is something most performers (even today) seems to struggle with.
Also, she didn’t came to play games with the art cover and aesthetics this era, the album cover and the booklet is her most gorgeous to date, with the former having her most flattering front picture of any of her albums and the neon typography creating a very pleasing contrast with her elegant black-and-white imagery (in the deluxe edition) or the elegantly, milky pastel coloring of the standard edition.

THERE CAN BE 100 LISTENERS IN THE ROOM AND 99 LEAVE BUT ONE... - BRITNEY JEAN THE DAY IT DEBUTED

https://preview.redd.it/hpjl86hfce221.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a01c8129a31203474b2bafbc17ea994d5f83e132

Britney and her team gave up quite easily on Britney Jean and, honestly, they shouldn’t be blamed: the offer to have a Vegas Residency with a salary of $15 million dollars per year seems like the kind of offer a pop star and mother of two with enough money already for several timelines would accept, with the album itself being more of an afterthought.
Britney was originally slated to remain on the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino for two years but ultimately extended her run for another two years, before finally touring overseas (without an album attached to the performances) during 2017 and 2018.
Because of the lack of promotion, Britney Jean underperformed when compared to Miss Spears’ previous releases, with estimated worldwide sales (as of April 2018) being close to 1.3 million copies, less than a third of Femme Fatale’s sales.
Truth be told, BJ flopped hard… HOWEVER, not everything would have turned out that terrible (not even in a million years it would have sold as much a FF but at least the downfall could have been smaller) with some actual promotion and interest from Brit herself.

SOME REACHING… I MEAN… THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BRITNEY JEAN

BJ is, in my opinion, a compilation of the era, the resume of “in the previous episode of” that you get on serialized TV shows, a farewell to the bombastic era of synth-heavy EDM club anthems with gratuitous drops and interchangeable lyrics. During the genre’s opus, some performers tried to bend this sound (and their equivalents) to their benefit, either mixing it with their style or playing with the boundaries of the sound: it could be a Taylor Swift doing a We Are Never Getting Back Together to get a broad crossover hit, a Lady Gaga mixing multiple genres to create a sonically complex pastiche called Born This Way, or even straight-up jumping almost seamlessly from rap/R&B to club bangers like Nicki Minaj did in Roman Reloaded. Britney in Britney Jean did almost the opposite of that.
Britney Jean is, in some ways, a time capsule of the era in its rawest and purest form (some might differ and replace those buzzwords with generic and bland), with the average user being able to trace mostly any track to a style, influence, sub-genre or even performer. Listening to BJ is like watching a 70s movie in VHS in an old, square TV, basically an unintentional period piece that reflects the volatile, bombastic and extravagant style of those golden years of 2008-2013, which, within the mindset of Britney Jean sounds kinda tired and bland, surprising no one when that branch of pop went back into obscurity and irrelevance almost as fast as grunge music did when Kurt Cobain died.
Britney Jean came up in a time of transition of popular music, with streaming showing the kind of power it had on the charts and more subdued, minimalistic music taking the world by storm. Popular music, as you might already noticed, evolved into a slower, more melodic, calculated, numb, almost anticlimatic entity which was more fitting with our current social and political climate. To paraphrase Todd in the Shadows: 2013 had a hit literally called Happy and 2018 had both a hit called SAD! and another called Happier with a video about a dog that dies.
In terms of Britneyology (both the study of Britney Spears and the religion dedicated to her persona), BJ is also a glimpse into Britney the full-fledged artist. Britney has never been the kind of performer that gets heavily involved into her music, with Britney’s role being generally limited to the choice of songs, sequencing, development of sounds and themes with her assigned team of writers and producers, and performing of course; sometimes Britney gets involved into the heavier portions of her music (the classic Everytime is a great example of it) but most of the time she remains quite anonymous, with her voice and choice being overwritten by the men on charge, something that became quite apparent during and after the Dark Ages (2004-2008) with the cancelling of the legendary Original Doll, her lack of songwriting credits in both Blackout and Circus, and her much-criticized anonymity in Femme Fatale.
BJ was Britney deciding who does want to work with, what does she wants to sing and even how to equilibrate her musical and visual persona. Britney has always being in control of how is she portrayed on official media, most famously rejecting an animated concept for the video of …Baby One More Time in favor of a Lolita-inspired take on catholic school girls, and then the slow process from jailbait to grownup woman. During the post-production of the Work Bitch video, she clashed with director Ben Mor over the kind of content the video should show, as she was a mother in her 30s now instead of an unreachable male gaze fantasy.
With BJ, the Legendary Miss Britney Spears showed us how much she has changed since that controversial 2003/2004 period (the last time she was that involved with an album) in which she received the Kiss of Death from Madonna, suffered her infamous accident and, of course, married twice in a calendar year. This new Britney was a much-different person, and her voice deserved to be heard, and even if the results weren’t the greatest, it was a step into the right director for Britney to get what she always wanted: being a full-fledged artist capable of taking her own decisions and learning from her mistakes.

POP AFTER BRITNEY JEAN

Coincidentally in 2014 most of the ambassadors of the dominant pop sound of the early 10s were either taking a musical break, flopping or changing lanes, so that year paved the way for the transition of what do we define as popular music, with the winners of the evolution race being trap (Fetty Wap’s Trap Queen), meme music from awful people (Bobby Shmurda’s Hot Nathans) or untalented losers (T-Wayne’s Nasty Freestyle, Silentó’s Watch Me), trop pop (OMI’s Cheerleader, Justin Bieber’s entire Purpose era) or whatever outlier track dared to pass through those filters.
What happened afterwards is a horror story most of popheads tells in fire camps a la Are You Afraid of the Dark?

BRITNEY AFTER BRITNEY JEAN

Glory , the follow-up Britney Jean, received very positives reviews and was considered a strong return-to-form for Britney, and even if it wasn’t as successful as her label might have wanted, the truth is that, at the end of the day, whatever Britney decides to do next (and considering the direction she seems to be taking) it can be as underwhelming as Britney Jean.
